Mere Cricket Club Mere CC 1st XI v Deverills on Sun 25 Aug 2013 at 2.00
Mere Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Skipworth Steadies the Ship and Sails Mere Home

The Deverills returned to Duchy Manor looking much keener than the previous season, all on time, smiling, and looking resplendent in their club caps. You got the sense from the off it was going to be a good contest.

Weir won the toss and elected to bowl. Not a decision that comes natural to Weir but the pitch looked very grassy. Groundsman Williams had done a good job and the pitch played very well.

The Deverills looked to be taking the game away from Mere in the first 10 overs. Ralph picked up anything short from Senior Pro Bryan Yeo’s bowling from the Fish Farm End. Yeo wasn’t able to make an early break through. Bowling down the hill from Dog Sh*t Alley was his daughter Becky Yeo who toiled hard. The trap had been set for Jones leaving a nice big gap at mid wicket and Yeo executed the first part of the plan perfectly bowling a tidy line on off stump. She’ll reeled him in, Jones played across the line looking for the gap and the leading edge dollied up to Yeo. Suffering from a nasty case of the catching yips of late she failed to land the catch.

Ed Ford had 2 expensive overs that added to the already out of hand extras column. The 2013 season’s habit of allowing extras to get ridiculously out of hand in the majority of weekend games looks to continue onto the bitter end. Again, extras were the second top scorer with a generous 37.

It took skipper Weir to make the breakthrough with his first delivery. The rest of his spell is best not mentioned (2-0-7-1). Skipworth took over from Senior Pro Bryan Yeo with good figures of (5-2-13-3) making excellent inroads into the Deverills batting line up.

Mike Ryan continues to be Mere’s most consistent performer with the ball. Line and length is rarely an issue for him. 12 year old Ralph came to the crease and Weir took the sporting decision to bring Ryan off earlier than he would otherwise have wanted to (5-2-22-1).

It was Whitmore (7-2-11-2) and Williams (5-2-6-0) who really tied The Deverills scoring down with a very tidy partnership.

Ed Ford bowled 2 overs at the death that were in complete contrast to his first 2 overs. Hopefully next season we’ll continue to see the good improvement he has made this year.

Cassidy and Becky Yeo opened the batting. Unfortunately Becky Yeo was out first ball of the innings. She took it well and definitely did not proceed to whack the ball for four after her bails went flying and definitely did not go missing for some time after her dismissal.

Pitts went in and came out soon after for 4 trying to cut one on his stumps.

Weir continues to be Umpire Whitmore’s bunny as he gave him out LBW …again, this time for 13. There was a rumour going around Burton from those that heard the snick that Weir may just have hit that ball. The skipper seemed to take it very well, definitely not calling Whitmore every expletive he knew before looking up and seeing Mrs Whitmore sitting next to him in the pavilion and definitely didn’t mention it in the pub afterwards any more than 24 times.

Cassidy plugged away with the ever present high elbow and good timing to get himself to a decent 20 before Mead clean bowled him. Harvey also went cheaply for 2.

So it was left to Skipworth (56no) and Ryan (36) to steady the ship. Two batsman more than capable of doing so but it was a hard exam which they both past with flying colours. Ryan was out trying to win the game in style, caught and bowled by Read with the scores level. Williams put his pads back on for a match winning 1 not out. Mere the eventual winners in the end by 4 wickets.

The Treasurer’s office released a statement on Sunday confirming the bowling and batting cup rules had changed the first time this season and were only going to take into account weekend games. So with that in mind the following statistics may be of interest with 2 games to go…

Batting:
1. Weir - 523
2. Skipworth – 471

Bowling:
1. Whitmore - 17
2. Yeo (Becky) - 15
Skipworth - 15
3. Harkin – 14
4. White – 13
