Erlestoke and Coulston v Mere Cricket Club Mere CC 1st XI on Sun 07 Sep 2014 at 2.00
Mere Cricket Club Lost by 60 runs

Match report Butter fingers!
On a beautiful September day, Mere took the trip to Erlestoke looking to take advantage of the small boundaries their ‘walled’ ground (the ground is set in an old walled garden) offers.
‘Stand in’ Skipworth lost the toss but was then told that the home team had a ‘strong’ side out and the choice of batting or bowling was passed back to ‘Stand-in’ – he chose to bowl on what looked a nice ‘green’ seamer friendly wicket (little did he know).
‘Wide Boy’ Rutherford and Harkin Jnr opened the bowling and both passed the bat at times. Next to was Will B-S and Ed Ford (making a rare 2014 Sunday appearance). The batsmen now were well set and the scoring rate started to increase. Then Steve P and Senior Pro Yeo tried their luck and finally Mere picked up a wicket – Bryan having the opener caught at point by Will B-S. The runs were still flowing now though and ’Stand in’ gave the ball to Harkin Snr and Cassidy Jnr to try their luck. It wasn’t George’s day and opener Bedford reached his century with three 6s over the leg side. It was a good innings but we did give him 4 lives!
At one point, it looked like Mere were going to be chasing in excess of 300 but good ‘death’ bowling from ‘Champagne’ Charlie, ‘Wide Boy’ Rutherford and Harkin Jnr kept the total down to 271 for 4 off 40 overs – after Bedford’s 143, the 2nd top scorer was……extras (surprise, surprise).
Tea time – a smorgasbord of delights with enough to feed the players, scorers, umpires, spectators and the population of the entire village (top cuppa too)!
In reply ‘Stand in’ sent in Cassidy Snr and ‘Wide Boy’ Rutherford (for whom it was the last game of the season). Both played positively from the start and had the scoreboard rattling along. Then came a steady stream of wickets – first Cassidy Snr, then Rutherford for a 34 ball 51 (including 2 lost balls over the wall). Charlie struggled to get going against their former Bath opening bowler Dorgan and was out trying the flick the ball to leg and being caught in the covers. Will B-S then decided to test Dorgan’s throwing arm and the direct hit saw him well short of his ground. Cassidy Jnr then was ‘yorked’ by the same player and suddenly the momentum of the inning was lost as ‘Stand in’ struggled to get the ball off the square. Eventually boundaries came and ‘Stand in’, together with Harkin Jnr, pushed the score along – young Danny playing really well for 32 not out. The innings closed on 211 for 6 and we had lost by 60 runs.
Over a nice pint in the ‘local’ afterwards, whilst watching the Eoin Morgan highlights show, the opposition captain then told us that we hadn’t even seen the best batsmen in their team who were due in at 6 and 8. To be honest………..I think some of our players were glad quite about that!
Back at the Walnut, we were left to discuss the dropped catches - which the Treasurer was more than happy to collect fines for (his pockets were full by the end of the night).
