Whitmore brings Mere home in Blandford Thriller

16 Jul 2013

Mere under 9's secured their first victory of the season away against Blandford on Sat 13th July.

A much improved bowling performance by the whole team with the help of some sharp fielding and catching restricted Blandford to 274 off their 16 overs. Jack Deeker took his first wicket of the season and fielded really well, other notable performances coming from Sam with wickets and catches and new recruit Max who bowled really well on his first appearance.
Charlie B was tenacious as ever his leg spin on a hard wicket often beating the batsman but bouncing just over. He got his reward with a sharp catch off his own bowling. Captain Whitmore (Robyn not her illustrious Father Kevin) also bowled tidily, picking up a wicket, backed up by our other two female players, Jess and Jo who did well. Stand-out performance was by Ollie Forsey behind the stumps who held everything that came his way, capping his day with a sharp spinning catch, which would have tested the best keepers.

Mere's innings started well with a flurry of fours from Charlie Bateson, ably assisted by Sam who also hit a boundary and ran well. Jack Deeker continued his great improvement this season batting solidly, calling well and hitting his first boundary. All Mere's batting pairs made telling contributions, and it came down to the last over with skipper Whitmore cracking a four with just balls to spare to see Mere home for a well deserved victory. All season the team has improved from game to game often just losing by narrow margins, but on this performance they should expect great things next year. Well done you guys!
