Match report
So a new fixture and a new challenge, find the pitch! We all knew where Port Regis School was and we thought we all knew where the cricket pitches were, however at 6.15, which was the start time, we all rocked up in the car park only to find out that the pitch was some way away hidden in the woods.
Anyway, a tad late, the Don, covering for the even later arrival of the midweek captain Mark Williams, having won the toss, he had no idea what to do and chose to bat. The cards were dealt out although the openers Lawrence 'Amir Khan' Yeo and Matt Pitts were pointed towards the ace and number two to ensure we presented an opposition worthy of such surroundings.
The Tottenham Tonker was suprised to see that they had an artificial strip and that no one had told him so without the right footwear and promptly buggered off.
Jon Mapp, Rebecca's boyfriend made a guest appearance so if anyone else has a boyfriend who would like a game give just us a a shout (Mike or Dave). Although he denied going to Kings, he clearly looked the part, had the right technique and accent to have sat amongst Matt, Duncan and Charlie in the first eleven at Bruton.
Talking of our captain Duncan he arrived late, not selected for either team apparently due to work commitments. Clearly split loyalties having I'm sure captained the schools unders 11s to many a victory and his new adpoted club Mere.
On the batting front despite Amir hitting a six with his first shot and a steady 21 from Matt Pitts a classic player more suited to the longer form of the game it was a day for lots of starts but no single big score which in hindsight was what we needed against a tidy and consistent attack which included a slightly over enthusiastic South African who bounced and sledged Lewis after he's been smashed for two. He also question being called wide by Amir (he clearly had no idea what trouble he could have been in if Lawrence had taken offence at his dissent).
Highlights of our time in the field included two of the best catches I've seen since last years slip catch by the Don or perhaps the caught a bowled again by the Don at Thornford earlier this season. The first came from Mark Williams who dived to make a terrific caught and bowled, it's worth saying at this point that the captain Mark W had dropped two earlier and easier catches although not off his own bowling. Then Lawrence caught the hardest hit caught and bowled any of us had ever seen. Then Mr T had a chance to make it three caught and bowled but apparently slipped in the effort. There were other dropped catches although there was a view that despite paying the required fine the Don's effort was simply a great stop.
On the bowling front we missed the pace of the Ginger Ninja who was apparently watching Batman as the game clashed with Orange Wednesday! Tidy spells from Becky, Lawrence and Lewis were not enough to restrict the Rejects to a score below Mere.
Looking back we could have hit a few more runs, bowled a little tighter, held a few more catches but as the Port Reject who hit over 50 said, it looked far more fun playing in your team with everyone bowling and indeed picking most of the batting order from a pack of cards.
Finally our new recruit Alex Ross appeared a tad shocked to be fined a £1 for being hit for six, however as the Don pointed out how would he ever learn without a consequence. Despite that he'll make an excellent addition to our midweek team.
