Mere Cricket Club Mere CC U13's v Blandford A on Tue 08 May 2012 at TBA
Mere Cricket Club Won by 37 runs

Match report Mere under 13's recorded their first win of the new campaign against Blandford in a cup game at Mere. Mere won the toss and decided to bat in a game consisting of 16 overs per side. Mere started steadily with the opening pair William Batty-Smith and Danny Harkin looking comfortable from the off. Will was in fine form, forcing the ball around on a long slow outfield which meant many shots that on a normal day would have raced for four, were only rewarded with two at best. Danny provided a solid foil at the other end and went about his innings with purpose, looking to take the single whenever offered. Will reached his retirement mark with an imperious 6 over the deep long on boundary, an innings which comprised 3 boundaries too. Captain George Cassidy came in at number three and looked at home until he chopped on to his stumps trying to force a ball of the back foot when on 9. Danny was then joined at the crease by Jani Guy Knapp (1) Jack Harvey (2) Harry Bateson (3) and Michael Whitmore (1 n.o)until he was run out on 29 off the last ball of the innings. Mere posted a competitive total of 95 and took to the field feeling that it was a defendable total.

Cassidy opened his attack with Will Batty Smith who looked fast and on the button from the 1st ball. He removed the Blandford opener White with his 5th ball clattering in to middle stump. His opening batting partner Danny Harkin took the ball from the Burton Path end and bowled with deadly accuracy, with his first two overs only yielding 2 for Blandford's batsmen. The other Blandford opener having survived an appeal for caught behind in the 1st over was then run out for 3 with the score on 9 after the 6th over. Mere were really on top in the field and more tight bowling from Danny Harkin (3-1-3-1) J Harvey (3-0-10-0)J Guy-Knapp (3-1-6-0) restricted the Blandford batsmen to the odd scampered single or two. Backed up by overs from Harry Bateson with his prodigous spin, brother Freddie and young Charlie Cassidy, and some sharp fielding especially young Robyn Whitmore who showed her Dad Kevin the way to pick up cleanly in one hand and deliver a throw over the stumps which led to Simms who had looked good up till then run out, Mere were in control. Further sharp work in the field by Michael Whitmore was unlucky not to result in further run outs. Blandford finally finished in poor light on 58-4 some 37 short of their target. The game was played in good spirit and both sides were a credit to their respective clubs. Thanks to Kevin Whitmore who kept score and Mark Williams who umpired.
