Match report
Mere Demolished by Dinton
The hottest day of the year. A toss you just desperately needed to win. Unfortunately Dinton called correctly and it was a ‘no brainer’ and they chose to bat first subjecting Mere to a long hot afternoon in the field.
Dinton racked up 288-6 which according to the Secretary’s excellent records page on the website smashes Chawton’s previous record versus Mere on a Sunday friendly of 212-2. Young Randall dominated with the bat scoring 146. A fine innings keeping the ball on the ground until he had passed his century. He cleverly picked the gaps with Mere’s 10 fielders struggling in the heat.
Parton pulled his groin half way through - Melanie confirming later in the Nut that it was very bruised and swollen - leaving 9 fielders capable of moving. A headache for the skipper toiling behind the stumps. If the Secretary kept more detailed records, the 32 wides served up is likely to be unbreakable.
If it wasn’t for the father and son combination of S.Harkin (8-1-37-0) and D.Harkin (8-2-42-3) it could have been 388-2. S.Harkin the most economical at a generous 4.6 an over and D.Harkin showing a mature head on young shoulders with a impressive display of in swing bowling picked up all the adult wickets.
Other positives in an otherwise average performance in the field was Jamie Bettesworth 4 overs (4-0-20-0) and Kev Whitmore helping Mere out with 10 overs to go, or was it 6 overs, or just the one over? Who knows with M.Harkin’s creative scoreboard technique that flummoxed all including the skipper. Needless to say Whitmore picked up a couple of good looking teenagers in his usual Sunday afternoon routine.
It would be great to write of the spirited come back showing great character, grit and determination but Mere were skittled out for lacklustre 90 in the 21st over. Weir made 50 with 3 lusty blows including a ‘fish farmer’; extras made 24 and the remaining 10 batsman rustled up 16 between them with S.Harkin second top scoring with 6.
It’s hard to know what Tony Traves thought about it all pacing between the John White Terrace and the Tony Traves Stand. Luckily we didn’t see the season ticket ripped up into tiny pieces as it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Five teenagers turned out, some at late notice and all got some good senior team experience. Mere’s wicket continues to improve and many thanks to Whitmore and Williams for their efforts. The teas continue to be of a very high standard this season. Every week you are waiting for the cardboard sandwiches, poor cake selection and 5 plates of crisps. Not this week. Another blinder, this time for K.Harkin. Good sarnies, cherry tomatoes – always a nice touch and a great cake selection (including lemon drizzle of course). J.Harkin helped out with the drinks. The Harkin family can go home proud after a good all round performance on and off the field – even young Mitchell who made a complete hash of the scoreboard but all with the best intentions of getting involved and helping out.
