Match report
Fonthill
Weir won the toss and elected to bat. He sent in the father son combination of George and Mark Cassidy to open the batting. Mark made a promising 30 before being trapped lbw. George was caught short on 12. Pitts, Batty-Smith and Weir all came and went in relatively quick succession. White (20), in form Skipworth (38), ever improving Harvey (13) and Becky Yeo (14) helped Mere reach a total of 154 for 8 off their 35 overs.
Some experimental chilli sandwiches were very much of the marmite love or hate variety but the pork and stuffing sandwiches were the best sarnies on offer all season.
Rain had been on and off as had the players but the game did not have to be reduced.
Murray, Burton and Rawlinson all went quickly, lbw. Some didn’t look happy with the decisions but Frank is one of the best and rarely gives a leg before so they tend to be plum. Murray claimed an inside edge which only he heard. It would certainly have been reviewed on Hot Spot by him to prove his innocence. Rawlinson and Burton looked gonners from square leg let alone front on. Never-the-less you could hear the chuntering from the side lines. That’s cricket I’m afraid.
A stronger middle order of Migurenda (14), Medlock (22), Andrews (32), Ravplay (20) helped Fonthill in a healthy run chase. The wickets kept falling though and the game was in the balance. When Gordon came to the crease the pressure was on. He didn’t to worry and thrashed a winning 11 like he was netting against the Under 10’s and Fonthill were victorious.
Mere’s best bowling came from Becky Yeo with her 7-0-23-3 but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Will Batty-Smith also showed excellent maturity bowling tightly at the death.
Another enjoyable encounter with Fonthill and we’ll look forward to next year’s instalment.
