Mere Cricket Club Mere CC 1st XI v Hazelbury Bryan on Sun 04 Aug 2013 at 2.00
Mere Cricket Club Won by 73 runs
Match report
Mere welcomed Hazelbury Bryan to the Duchy Fields on Sunday 4 August and were entertained by their pre match warm up of bottle throwing. Fortunately plasters were available and administered to the walking wounded. An unusual custom and hopefully not too widespread in cricketing circles and unlikely to replace the more recognised throw downs.
It was always going to be a delayed start and during a break in rain captain Kevin Whitmore won the toss and elected to bat, eager to see what the opening bowlers could throw at the opening pair of Matt Pitts and Mark Cassidy. Pitts started with due caution whilst Cassidy returned a gentle catch back to bowler early in the proceedings. Mikey Ryan got established and threatened to accelerate until he managed to reach a ball heading for second slip and steered it to backward point for a respectable 27. When Pitts was finally stumped for 47 he was a good distance down the pitch and just kept walking. After a heavy Saturday night in Bournemouth Ben Skipworth took guard and we thought actually seeing the ball might be his greatest challenge. In fact it turned out to be Mark Williams who decided Sunday afternoon was an opportunity to display his gazelle like speed and turn a comfortable single into an improbable two, leaving Skipworth approximately half the length of the pitch short of his ground. The bowling was causing little problem to the middle and lower order until Charlie Cassidy, guesting for the visitors, came on to bowl. A straight one was enough to break Williams’ wicket and although Sean Harkin stroked a speedy 25 young Cassidy had Jason Harvey caught just backward of square and on his way back to the pavilion without disturbing the scorers. George, the third of the Cassidy clan on duty, came in to face his sibling, blocked a couple and took a single – honours even ! Mere completed their innings on 175 and tea was taken.
With the excellent selection of sandwiches, vol-au-vents, cream scones and cake you could be forgiven for thinking that some tea might remain on the hands and fingers giving some adhesive assistance between hand and ball. Not a chance, at least four chances went down with effortless ease leaving Hazelbury’s batsmen the problem of how to get out. Lewis Wood opened the bowling and with cunning guile and flight took 2 for 21.It could easily have been 4.Harkin also bowled tidily finishing with 3 for 8. Brian Yeo with his first ball picked up a wicket with an audible nick to Cassidy snr standing up to the stumps. Wickets fell at regular intervals and finally Charlie Cassidy arrived at the crease. Captain Whitmore’s eyes lit up having already taken a wicket early in his spell and saw the opportunity to double his haul. Cassidy played with no fear and Whitmore removed himself from the attack. George returned at the Fish Farm End and finished the match having Charlie caught for 4. Hazelbury Bryan’s innings finished on 103 giving Mere a comfortable win by a margin of 72 runs.
