Dinton v Mere Cricket Club Mere CC 1st XI on Sun 04 May 2014 at 2.00
Mere Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
It was a glorious May day and the previous day’s strip freshly rolled and cut looked superb. Dinton did the double over Mere last season so the performance was going to have to be good for Mere to get their first victory of the season.
Young Danny Harkin opened the bowling with Becky Yeo. By the time they had finished their opening spells the damage was done. Game over. Danny Harkin got his name on the imaginary honours board with 6-1-8-5- well supported by Becky finishing with figures of 5-1-8-1.
Sadly Dinton continued to capitulate, all out for 37. Believe it or not you need just 22 to beat Thornford as the lowest total v Mere so another disappointment for Dinton not to break the record.
This report could be a ball by ball account of the entire match and still be a shorter match report than those written by K.Whitmore Esq. For avid Whitmore match report fans it will make for a disappointing read.
Other highlights within the 13.4 overs included a dropped catch by Harkin senior that would have been easier to catch than spill; and the caught and bowled circus juggling act of by Wide Ball Rutherford’s father Ian (who bowls less wide balls than his son).
Old Mere stalwart Dave Bayliss opened the batting with Dan Brickell. They made a handy opening partnership of 19. It doesn’t sound much but 19 was more than half the runs needed to win and they managed to defend the barrage of Dinton speedster Allen. It paved the way for an easy victory by 8 wickets. Williams and Batty-Smith seeing Mere home before tea.
