Compton Chamberlain v Mere Cricket Club Mere CC 1st XI on Sun 03 Aug 2014 at 2.30
Mere Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Compton Chamberlayne (CCCC) have the picture perfect, stereotypical village cricket ground that we all look forward to visiting. Some were hoping to see a repeat of Dave Rutherford’s feats from last season (a century batting at number 10) but unfortunately Dave decided to save himself for the upcoming semi-final. Mere ended up taking a ‘young’ team with even Mike Ryan being deemed an ‘old head’ in this side.
Skipper Weir lost the toss and we were to be given the first use of a brand new ‘cherry’ but CCCC have experienced a lot of problems losing balls in the surrounding undergrowth and instead we got the use of a brand new ‘orange’! Harkin Jnr, this year’s top wicket-taker (take note Dad), started proceedings and immediately Cassidy Jnr (keeping wicket with Dad relegated to fielding at mid-off) found the orange ball moving prodigiously both ways (and up and down off the surface too). CCCC started well and both openers kept clearing the infield (just) which frustrated Danny, Lewis, Bryan and Will. In the end it was Mike Ryan who broke the stand, going on to pick up 3 good wickets and when Skipworth’s ‘offies’ picked up a couple of wickets, CCCC found themselves 5 wickets down. At this point Weir turned to young Cassidy Jnr mk2 (Charlie) who bowled well but the Skipper went for the kill by bringing himself on. 2 overs, 2 maidens and 3 wickets later Duncan took a ‘blow’(and a big leap up the wicket taking charts) but there was still time for Whitmore to destroy another young player’s dream and Cassidy Snr to launch a grenade that the CCCC number 9 decided to hit straight to mid-on. CCCC 144 all out.
Tea – Coronation Chicken sandwiches, homemade fresh cream éclairs and fruit a plenty – lovely. All washed down with a nice cuppa or for most of our side, an orange squash.
Weir and Cassidy Snr went out to start the chase and did so with aplomb. Both reached very good 50s in a wonderful partnership of 138, the highlight being Cassidy’s ‘pick up’ for 6 over deep midwicket. Duncan was at his imperious best and got out chasing the last few runs. This allowed young Will to show his Captain the way to finish the match – 2 balls faced, the first driven for 4 through extra-cover and the second driven for 6 over long-off – job done Skipper!
A resounding win and some great performances too but I have to give a special mention for one of ‘our’ under 13s who played for CCCC – Harry Bryson. He opened the bowling and bowled the only maidens CCCC managed in the entire Mere innings, one of these to Duncan which is no mean feat. It was a great testament to his attitude and development over the course of this year. It had all of us talking about the future of the Club in the Walnut Tree with no fewer than 5 Mere CC juniors (15 and under) playing active roles in the match.
