Mere Cricket Club Mere CC 1st XI v Hospital Services on Sun 17 Jun 2018 at 2.00 pm
Match was Tied
Match report
An extraordinary 35 over match took place at Duchy Manor on 17th June 2018 between Mere and the ever vivacious Hospital Services Cricket Club from St. Leonards, Bournemouth.
Mere won the toss and skipper Weir elected to bat. In the 34th over Hospital services took their first wicket of the day, Cassidy bowled by Dr Wijesinghe for 47 with the team score at 207 (rumoured to be a Mere partnership record but yet to be confirmed by K.Whitmore, club statistician and future editor of Wisden). This allowed Steve Parton, already suffering from a bout of pavilion induced pad rash, a small cameo of 2, caught on the last ball of the innings. Mere’s batting was dominated by the skipper’s bottom hand 158no, assisted by several dropped catches and missed run out opportunities. Mere finished on 210 for 2 from their 35 overs.
Buoyed by a good tea (with labelled sandwiches) from the President and the fact that 8 players had done nothing but spectate for half the afternoon, Mere took to the field with energy and positive vigour. 24 overs later… Mere finally took their first wicket, Dr Wijesinghe run out (sub). Becky took a horrendous knock to the shin forcing her off the field. It was the NHS at its very best. Several doctors on hand immediately with an excellent bedside manner and no waiting time. Fortunately Jo Ralph of Marnhull CC just happened to be watching and in true Gary Pratt style ran out Wijensinghe with a direct hit attacking the ball a good 10 mph quicker than the average Mere fielder and a throw a good 20 mph harder than the average Mere shy. It was an over-arm throw as well which is a luxury skill for the average Mere fielder.
200 for 1 off 30 overs needing only 11 runs to win off the last 5 overs (req. run rate 2.2 per over with 9 wickets in hand), the diagnosis was a comfortable win for the visiting doctors. The ink was dry on the prescription of ‘cold beer in The Nut’ to be taken immediately after stumps.
Parton, Yeo, Yeo, Bateson, Batty-Smith, Whitmore and Ryan all had bowling spells that included a mixture of encouraging tidy overs only to disappoint with some highly expensive overs. Miles Lewis was the only bowler to show any consistency with 7-0-30-0. Batty-Smith and Ryan were given a second chance to prove themselves. Weir had given up on spreading the field and brought everyone in on the single on using the traditional s*** of bust philosophy.
Hospital Services’ innings was dominated by Dr Bamford who was finally dismissed for a clinical 116, bowled by 2018 current leading wicket taker, Batty-Smith in the 31st over with the team score still at 200. This was followed by two further wickets in the same over. A triple wicket maiden no less – 2018 Champagne moment? 200-4. Ryan then joined the party with a wicket in the 32nd over. A lovely diving catch behind by the Chairman. 201-5. With panic setting in the Hospital Services’ wards there was a run out in the 33rd. 204-6. In the 34th over Ryan then had Dr Baker trapped LBW. 206-6. Last over 5 to win. Another run out on the attempted 3rd run. 208-7. 2 to win off 3 balls. Dot ball. Penultimate ball, a single and the scores are tied. Last ball one run to win… RUN OUT. 210-8.
7 wickets for 10 runs in 5 overs and the match was tied! Miss-diagnosis but the medicine remained the same ‘cold beer in The Nut’ to be taken immediately after stumps.
